In the Spring of 2017 Joe will be taking his full band on the road for the first time. Together they are a blistering, shimmering 4 piece comprised of exemplary musicians who recreate and re-energise the soulful, folk-rock songs from both of the extraordinary albums that have won Winter Mountain so much acclaim. The musicians playing credits between them include Joss Stone, Beverly Knight, Seth Lakeman, Sandy Shaw, Madness, Mark Ronson, Jamiroquai – the list goes on!
Hailing from the wild and beautiful northern shores of Cornwall, UK Joe Francis AKA Winter Mountain blends melodic songs, an extraordinary voice and heartfelt lyrics in a sound reminiscent of a time before digital recording, when the emphasis fell on the importance of the live performance and the essence of the song.
It was these very qualities that inspired folk star Cara Dillon and her husband/producer Sam Lakeman to sign Winter Mountain to their ‘Charcoal Records’ label after watching a performance in Donegal, Ireland.
Winter Mountain released a self titled debut album in 2013 to unanimous critical acclaim with The Sunday Express stating it to be ‘an utterly fabulous record’ and awarding it a 5 star review. The Irish Post called it ‘A smashing album, a terrific, classy debut’, whilst Maverick Magazine had this to say: ‘Winter Mountain make them like they used to, and three cheers for that!’.
Tracks from Winter Mountain’s debut album still receive regular national radio play from the likes of Janice Long, Dermot O’Leary, Clare Balding (BBC Radio 2), on RTE Radio 1 and from local stations in both the UK and Ireland – with the new album also following suit!
2017 promises to be a huge step forward for this incredible songwriter!
Gus moved to Belfast in 2013 to study Sonic Arts at Queen’s University, where he developed his songwriting and sound. Influenced by Jeff Buckley, Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake, it is perhaps unsurprising that Gus’ sound is rooted in acoustic music. The more experimental aspects to his sound were developed at uni through his interest in electroacoustic music. Fusing his songs with acousmatic elements, he spent a year writing and recording his debut EP in Belfast and at his home studio in Wiltshire. The result is a beautifully crafted EP based on a dream diary that Gus kept whilst recording. It is scheduled for self-release in March 2017.
"A 1970s band shoved into a time machine, deposited in 2016 and asked to make a record about the world they find themselves in". The result: a darkly humorous and theatrical concept album (there's even a Greek chorus) about sex, money and missing David Bowie.
Four-part harmonies, duelling guitars, raspy sax and above all, soaring melodies abound; classic artists like Marc Bolan, Bryan Ferry, Frank Zappa, Lou Reed and the Thin White Duke himself are frequently referenced sonically, but put through Five Grand Stereo's proprietary blender to create some delightfully quirky results. Taking aim at everything from reality TV to sexism, the band somehow manage to conjure up the sounds of 75...to take a pop at 2016. All while bashing some instantly memorable tunes into your eardrums.
Five Grand Stereo are Chris Singleton (vocals, guitar, piano); Jane Fraser (vocals); Stelios Kalisperides (guitars); Michael Kirkland (sax and synths); Zane Maertens (bass) and Ben Woollacott (drums).
Five Grand Stereo will be releasing their debut album in 2017. A four-track EP is currently available - see the store section for details.
